Half-Life 2's Storyline
Character PERSONALITY: Gordon is that particularly rare subspecies of nerd with an extra shot of testosterone in his system. On one hand he's bookish, erudite, and prone to wax metaphorical if you catch him in the right mood; and on the other he's competitive, confrontational, cutting in his logic and tends to let his actions speak for him when discourse is impossible, usually in the form of large explosions.
If you're on equal footing with him however, he's actually pretty friendly. Though perhaps... a little awkward. Being one of the youngest MIT graduates in history, one can imagine he didn't have much time to socialize in college, and they'd be right. He tends to use his experiments or the immediate problem at hand as a shield against talking about interpersonal matters. When the immediate task at hand involves wading through a crowd of zombies, it's easy to forget what the hell you were going to say anyway. The man is brilliant, but with a wide knowledge base and tendency to think three steps ahead of everyone else in the room, he also has a habit of talking over everyone else's heads. He doesn't mean to of course; it just happens. He's cognizant enough to stop himself whenever he finds he's facing a room of glassy stares, and try to "retranslate" what he just said for everyone's benefit, usually through a cough and an awkward fidget. While Barney Calhoon and his security-guard buddies back at Black Mesa taught him to not be SUCH a scientist, sometimes the man still can't help himself.
Gordon works (and fights) smarter, not harder. He consistently looks for a easier solution "outside the box" and lets his environment do the work for him. Puzzles are of particular interest to him. He's the kind of guy that has to be pulled away from one--maybe literally--if he hasn't solved one yet. Jury-rigging weapons is a particular talent of his.
Being as he is a theoretical physicist, he's one of the few hard scientists that can get away with saying "why not" to match everyone else's "why." If something flies in the face of his conventional science studies--someone busts out some "magic" for instance, or he finds himself in conversation with a ghost or spirit--he just considers there's some avenue of the sciences that explains it that they haven't figured out yet. This mindset was an essential survival tactic out in New Mexico and in City 17; if he had been a chemist he would've lost his mind LONG ago.
One thing he selfishly wants is to have someone around that he can identify with: someone who speaks his proverbial language. He had one such person in Alyx Vance, but if he's here then he has no idea what's happened to her...
» EXSILIUM INFORMATION
Chosen WEAPON: HEV Mark IV Hazardous Environment Suit. While not a weapon, it's the one thing that has stayed with him the entire time and has a weapons selection system included. At higher levels the suit might protect him against things like vacuum, poisonous gases and fall damage. It might also have the ability to aesthetically change to better fit in with the era, and the ability to spontaneously produce items helpful for the task at hand (Albiet ones that may not seem helpful at first glance...)
Chosen SKILLSET: Equally suited for both research and combat. Will likely take a research or mentoring position, but go on the occasional mission as well (especially if he's convinced no one else can do it.)

First PERSON: [Maybe you're one of Gordon's students. Maybe you're a research buddy. In any case, you get a call at somewhere in the early afternoon of his voice and a view of the hallway bobbing by. One almost things he'd pocket-dialed you until he starts speaking.]
Okay, here's what's going on. So far the conditions for entanglement haven't changed, but we've got some hiccups in brane rift symmetry that could be a problem. Instead of a reliable way back to our own time, we're getting shunted off at an arbitrary point somewhere else. I doubt any of us wants to get stuck in the prehistoric, so I've--
[The camera shifts and bumps, and several stacks of folders become visible as he attempts to open his office door. It seems the reason he wasn't looking at the phone was because he was carrying it along with half the library's science publications. He slaps the folders down and addresses the camera properly now, looking a little harried.]
--I've requested a suspension on missions until we can be sure they're safe. All the same we'd better figure this out in a hell of a hurry; I know defense contractors. They don't like a wait on their product.
Third PERSON: Gordon ducks behind the masonry wall as stone shards fly off on impact with the operative's bullets. Goddammit, he should've known this would happen eventually! A handful of them were in the Initiative's Hold, though god only knew what they were after exactly. He spies a strange shimmer in the air just long enough to move, adrenaline imparting a positive feedback of his suit turning the lurch into a powered sprint as more weapons fire pings off the old architecture. They had some sort of cloaking device, all of them! How the hell were they going to be able to fight something they can't even see?
He stops in his run when he notices an old, rusted fire alarm plaque.
...
The sprinklers explode to life with the caustic rattle of an old bell alarm. The water is dingy and disgusting. Good. Means they'd be able to see them better. And as he thought, within moments a wet brown sheen appears to take the shape of a confused soldier. Gordon smirks and levels a pistol.
"Now that we've leveled the playing field..."
BANG.
» ADDITIONAL NOTES
The HEV suit is not exactly a companion character, but has its own set of flavor dialogue for exposition and to create dramatic tension; announcing how much power he has left in it or high levels or radiation or the like. It'll be rare, but when it does show up it will be shown in orange italics: Like this.
